Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse can affect anyone
Domestic abuse affects both women and men and comes in many forms – physical, emotional, sexual, financial and mental. Since 2015, coercive and controlling behaviours, such as gaslighting and other forms of psychological abuse, have become a prosecutable offence.
If you need urgent, immediate action to provide protection from harm, non-molestation orders and occupation orders can be obtained on an emergency basis. Legal Aid is available to help fund legal fees for most victims of domestic abuse.
If you’re a victim of domestic abuse, or are experiencing threatening or intimidating behaviour, you may be eligible to apply for a non-molestation order. This can ensure you (and any relevant children) are protected from further harm by preventing an abuser from contacting you or coming within a certain distance of you and your home. Occupation orders can also be issued to exclude your partner from your home or give them restricted access.
